Samuel Barber – what an exquisite piece we heard today! “Adagio for Strings” – masterful in our S.U.I.T.S application, wouldn’t you say?
I look forward to reading your notes about Mr. Barber as a composer and other important facts, but I TRULY can’t WAIT to see how you applied the praxi in YOUR favorite piece of music!
See you all tomorrow – oh, and if you are reading this, you should quickly sketch a picture of Samuel Barber on a small piece of paper – with your name on it…stick figures aren’t allowed, sorry – give it your best line design work. 🙂 Hand this to me at the door, very quietly..shhh…..

Elements of Music
Are you ready? Do you have them down, cold?! Hope so!
Today we had an Oreo filled elements exploration with iconic representations of sound – each representing the 6 properties of sound. I think you all understand the subtle nuances of auditory discrimination and you are ready to move forward. If you are reading this tonight, please greet me at the door with a short written explanation of why auditory discrimination skills are so important in music composition. Please have you name on your paper. Shhhh……..
Fun and MORE Fun…
This class cracks me UP! Such great humor and I appreciate your honesty and your willingness to jump, leap and put on S.U.I.T.S! Our element review was fast and furious and I can see that you are ready for your quiz tomorrow. All definitions with the terms will be checked on Thursday.
If you are reading this – research Samuel Barber – his date of birth and death – we will be using ‘Adagio for Strings’ to analyze our S.U.I.T.S! Put your name on your paper, write his name, and list his birth/death date. Also let me know where he was born. Shhhh………checking to see who is reading this 🙂 Make sure your name is on your paper and When you see me at the door, hand it to me quietly. Shhhh………..
Terms to Know
Great Day today, aGAIN!!! We are on a roll, now that we know the 6 properties of sound (say them with the meaning of each in your voice!) and the 12 elements of music. I know that the 12 elements can be disputed, depending on the ‘musical camp’ you might be in, but after 25 years of teaching, I know the break down is clear and the sequence helps to pull apart the sound in our world. So speaking of sound – what did you notice about the sound around you? What was the attack, delay, sustain, and release of the sounds around you? Obviously, all sounds are different. Which do YOU prefer. This is your ENTRANCE slip to my room on WEDNESDAY!! On a small piece of paper describe a sound you heard – describe it’s attack, delay, sustain, and release. Make sure your name is on your paper and When you see me at the door, hand it to me quietly. Shhhh………..
Laughter –
…is the best teaching tool….what a FUN group of students. Wow – and such energy from all of you! This is going to be a wonderful term – I can see it now.
Taking a quick baseline assessment tomorrow to identify what we need to review and then jumping into the praxis of music composition – just remember SUITS and you will have all 5 sets of opposites. If you are reading this – give me a knuckle bump tomorrow and you will get a surprise in the middle of class!
Day 1
This class is filled and what an energetic group of students we have! Can’t wait to move forward to study the properties of sound and move into the elements.
Pre assessment is first thing tomorrow – just a baseline read of what you know so I know how to make sure I focus on what you need!
