Each of you should be on the school debate team. We had an emotional and honest discussion about the VMAs last night. NO, we did NOT watch any videos – but we did discuss what happens when an artist pushes the envelope and how that can create or sustain stereotypes (both good and bad – depending on the envelope push!) and how we feel about such given situations. I appreciated all of your thoughts, knowing that while we truly believe in freedom of speech and the freedom for artistic creativity, there just might be certain actions, activities, or presentation styles that should or should not be placed in the public eye. And of COURSE the biggest question-just because an artist (musician in this case) behaves or performs and pushes against the norm, is that considered creative? Is it considered to be an art form? SO – what IS ‘art’ in the performance realm – and the bigger question – just because a person performs – does THAT skill make that person an artist? Who is an artist? Who deserves this term or title, if you will.
